Loud guitar riffs. Singing. Dancing. Piano music. Comedy. And of course, juggling.

This was all in the Community Building at River Crossing on Friday for Titan Production’s Open Mic Night.

The event opened at 7 p.m. with Adam Collins, a music major at IU South Bend, playing piano with two friends on drums and bass guitar. They continued entertaining the crowd throughout the night as various acts set up and tore down their equipment.

Sign-ups were first come first serve all night, and Titan Productions welcomed any performer.

Tinatin Saralidze, a piano major at IUSB, performed an original song on piano while singing.

“I wrote this song a year ago,” she said. “It is about how I will never leave my best friend. She will always be there for me.”

That night, there were about 20 people in the audience, clapping and cheering after each performance.

Juan Medina, a sophomore and a Resident Assistant at River Crossing, really enjoyed watching the performances.

“This is an opportunity for students and residents to socialize and have a break besides just studying and doing homework,” said Medina.

And students certainly took advantage of the opportunity. Amongst Saralidze’s piano playing, students sang other songs, played guitar, read poetry, recited a comedy act, and one performer even juggled while speaking to the audience.

Peter Farkas and Matt Kowalski performed together. At first, both performers played guitars. For an encore, Kowalski took the drums as Farkas played his electric guitar.

It was the first time the duo had performed together ever.

“I wrote the songs awhile back,” said Farkas. “Tonight I was just walking out of the door and asked Matt to come jam with me.”

They played original music, but had no lyrics. Both are hoping to add lyrics to the music soon.

“It was cool to just play tonight because I haven’t in so long,” said Kowalski.

The duo hopes to continue playing and are looking into adding a third member. They are hoping to perform at Titan Fest at the end of April.

This was the second time Titan Productions had hosted an Open Mic Night at the Community Building.

“Last semester we had a really good turnout, so we decided to do it again,” said Jillian Wilson, associate producer for Titan Productions. “We’re already looking at next year’s schedule.”

While the event once took place on campus, Titan Productions moved it to campus housing in order to engage more students and residents into the events together.
