Local historian and co-founder of the Civil Rights Heritage Center, David Healey has died. He was 61.

As a student at IU South Bend, Healey participated in the Freedom Summer which took students on a tour of the civil rights movement through the South in May 2000. Upon returning, Healey and other students and faculty established the Civil Rights Heritage Center (CRHC) to preserve the area's civil rights movement.

Healey headed a movement to preserve the community's oral history which lead him to discover the Natatorium, a public swimming facility that was once segregated, and its history. Currently, the Natatorium is being remodeled and will be the future home of the CRHC later this year.

Arrangements are pending for Healey.
