Indiana University graduate and South Bend dentist Dr. Paul Glass is familiar with performing check-ups. In fact, "check" is probably one of the most overused terms in the world of dental practice. However, nestled beyond the dental equipment and his smiling staff lays a slightly different kind of check. An oversized check made out for $20,000 to the Indiana University Foundation against the back wall- a physical representation of a remarkable contest prize to benefit the IU dental community.

Premier Dental Products hosted the Make a Difference Contest, an opportunity for dentists around the nation to try their luck at winning $20,000 to donate to the dental program of their choice. Glass explained that hundreds of dentists attending trade shows and finding out about the contest online were able to enter. However, only one name was chosen and Glass was the lucky winner. He chose to donate $15,000 of the winnings to IU Bloomington's dental school and $5,000 to IUSB's dental school.

"At first I didn't believe my receptionist… she came around and said 'you won $20,000'" he said "This stuff doesn't happen everyday, not this amount of money."

Glass said he instantly thought of IU's Community Outreach Program, which allows dental students to provide dental services locally to less-fortunate members of the community. IUSB also has a hand in this program and he said he wanted to see the money have an impact locally as well.

It's a great program that deals with things in the community," he said "Things like mobile dental units that do sealants… [The mobile dental units] haven't been able to do fillings and extractions because it wasn't equipped but there was a need for it."

Although specific details are still being worked out through IUSB's dental program, Glass and IUSB dental faculty will work together to ensure the money serves the program in the most beneficial way. Glass also added that he was not sure the contest would run next year because of financial constraints.

"Especially in today's economy there's more need than ever." Glass said.
